On November 15, 1989, a 16-year-old named Sachin Tendulkar made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi. Here’s a look back at Tendulkar’s performance in the Test, and how the Test panned out.

Tendulkar had a tough initiation. He lasted all of 24 balls, and managed to hit a couple of boundaries before being bowled by another debutant, Waqar Younis. In times to come, both would go on to become legends of the game.

The match

India won the toss and chose to field. Pakistan piled up 409 batting first. Imran Khan top-scored with an unbeaten 109. Javed Miandad contributed 78 from 179 balls while Shoaib Mohammad made 67. Manoj Prabhakar and Kapil Dev were the most successful Indian bowlers with 5 for 104, and 4 for 69 respectively. Pakistan were all out in 116.5 overs.

India made a disappointing 262 in return. Navjot Sidhu was dismissed for a duck, Kris Srikkanth for 4, Sanjay Manjrekar for 3 and Manoj Prabhakar for 4 as India collapsed to 41 for 5. It soon became 73 for 5 as Tendulkar fell. The lower order rescued India to an extent. Kiran More made a pugnacious unbeaten 58 while Kapil Dev made 55 and Ravi Shastri 45. They batted out time as well, as India were all out in 72.2 overs. Wasim Akram and Younis both claimed four wickets each for Pakistan.

The hosts responded with 305 for 5 declared in their second innings. Saleem Malik made an unbeaten 102 from 145 balls while Shoaib Mohammad contributed a hard-fought 95. Kapil picked up three of the five wickets to fall. Under pressure, India responded brilliantly to the tough chase of 453. They finished on a highly impressive 303 for 3. Sanjay Manjrekar led the way with an unbeaten 113 while Sidhu made a brisk 85. Srikkanth and Azhar chipped in with 30s each. Kapil was named man of the match for his all-round efforts in the drawn Test.

A match of debutants

As many as four players debuted in this Test – two from either side. Sachin Tendulkar and Salil Ankola for India and Waqar Younis and Shahid Saeed for Pakistan.
