Duncan Fletcher has been given a one-year extension as India Coach by the BCCI. The decision of the Indian Board is surprising as it was under the Zimbabwean national that India had faltered badly in Test Cricket after being the no.1 team at one stage. Under Fletcher, India lost 0-4 in England, 0-4 in Australia and recently had even lost a Test Series at home 1-2 against England. India has bounced back though with a 2-0 lead in the ongoing series against Australia but the failures prior to this had put Fletcher’s role under the scanner.

The 64-year-old Duncan Fletcher had a two-year contract that was to end this month end. It is learnt that the BCCI wanted to keep the continuity with Fletcher as he had mixed up with the youngsters very well and has got a bond going with most of the players. Speculation is that Fletcher could hold this job till the next World Cup as there would be little time for a new Coach to come in and get control of the Indian team.

For Fletcher, it would be a tough task ahead of him as India has a Test Series in South Africa and with most of the experienced players retired; the team which is in a rebuilding process is searching for a settled batting line-up.
