On a hard-fought day at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India inched ahead, if only slightly, thanks to fine hundreds from Murali Vijay and skipper Virat Kohli. The hosts finished the day on 451 for 7, with Kohli unbeaten on 147 and Jayant Yadav on 30. Here’s a look at significant numbers from the day’s play.

Virat Kohli is the second Indian captain after Sunil Gavaskar to score more than 500 runs in a Test series. He so far has scored 552 runs in the current series. Gavaskar, as skipper, scored 500 plus runs twice – 732 against West Indies in 1978-79 and exactly 500 against England in 1981-82.

Kohli has now become the fifth Indian batsman to score 500 or more runs in a single Test series more than once. The Indian captain finished with 692 runs during the series in Australia in 2014-15. Gavaskar made over 500 runs in a Test series as many as six times. Gundappa Vishwanath, Mohinder Amarnath and Dravid the feat on two occasions.

Indian captain Kohli became the joint second fastest batsman from the country to reach 15 Test hundreds. He got to the landmark in 89 innings, the same as Tendulkar. Gavaskar was the quickest, reaching 15 hundreds in 77 innings. Next on the list are Virender Sehwag (97), Mohammed Azharuddin (106) and Rahul Dravid (119).

Kohli also became the third Indian captain to score over 1000 Test runs in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid are the other two former skippers to do so. Tendulkar made exactly 1000 in 1997, and Dravid 1095 runs in 2006.

Kohli scoring 1000 plus runs is the 23rd instance of an Indian batsman crossing four-figures in a calendar year. Dravid was the last Indian to do so. He made 1145 runs in 2011 at an average of 57.25. Tendulkar has done so on as many as six occasions, Gavaskar four, while Dravid and Sehwag have achieved the feat three times each.

During the course of his unbeaten 147 on Saturday, Kohli also crossed 4000 Test runs. He reached the landmark in 89 innings. Kohli is the sixth fastest on the list of Indians to reach the landmark. Virender Sehwag was the quickest. He got there in 79 innings followed by Gavaskar (81), Dravid (84), Tendulkar (86) and Mohammad Azharuddin (88). He is the 14th India batsman to cross 4000 runs in Test cricket.

Murali Vijay returned to form with 136 at Wankhede. This was his eighth Test ton, and the first time since 2002 that an Indian opener has scored a Test hundred at Mumbai. Virender Sehwag had made 147 against West Indies in 2002. Vijay’s was the seventh Test ton by an Indian opener at the Wankhede stadium. As many as five hundreds were scored by Gavaskar, opening the innings.

Jayant Yadav is yet to be dismissed under 20 in his short Test career. He made 35 and 27 not out on debut at Vizag, 55 at Mohali, and now 30 not out at Mumbai.
