Yuzvendra Chahal defended MS Dhoni’s strange innings at Lord’s, stating it was a chance for him to get a knock. India were 140 for 4 chasing 323 when Dhoni came into bat but managed only 37 from 59 balls as India went down by 86 runs.

"Because later on there were only me, Siddarth and Kuldeep so it wasn't like two or three batsmen were remaining,”

"I think throughout the series Dhoni hasn't batted, so this was a chance to get a knock. Because if he had hit a shot and gotten out, maybe we couldn't have batted all 50 overs,” Chahal said on defence of Dhoni, in an AFP report.

Dhoni crossed 10,000 runs ODI runs during the innings but was booed for his slow batting. However, skipper Virat Kohli also spoke in defence of Dhoni.

"This comes up again and again when he is not able to play in the normal way he does. It’s very unfortunate people just jump to conclusions very quickly,” Kohli said.“When he does well, people call him the best finisher ever and when they don't go well, they all pounce on him. We all have bad days in cricket and today was a bad one for everyone, not just him,” Kohli went on to add.
