The sixth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a rather predictable one thus far, making for boring viewing. Four of the teams – Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, and Kings XI Punjab have been exceedingly poor, as a result of which they find themselves at the bottom of the table. One of the key reasons for these teams’ struggles has been that their star players haven’t performed. Here’s a statistical look at the same.

Yusuf Pathan (Kolkata Knight Riders): For the second season in a row, Pathan has been poor. In 13 matches, he has scored 193 runs, averaging under 22. Pathan’s highest score in this season so far is 49 not out, the only time he looked threatening. For a man of his calibre, a strike rate of 128 is below par.

Jacques Kallis (Kolkata Knight Riders): In 13 matches, the South African has compiled 245 runs, averaging just over 20. Kallis has not managed a single half-century, with a highest of 41. His strike rate too has been far from inspiring – just over 100

Yuvraj Singh (Pune Warriors):This is one season Yuvraj would like to forget as soon as possible. In 11 matches till date, he has managed 205 runs at an average of 20.50. The left-hander has got a highest score of a mere 34. His strike rate of 125 his acceptable, but the lack of runs pretty much nullify his rate of scoring. It is not surprising that Yuvraj’s woes have mirrored Pune’s.

Angelo Mathews (Pune Warriors):The experienced Sri Lankan has also failed to make any sort of impact for his side with the bat. In nine matches, he has only gathered 142 runs, with an average just crossing 20. While Mathews has maintained a strike rate of 121, he has only managed a highest score of 40.

Virender Sehwag (Delhi Daredevils): The threatening batsman has just played one innings of note. In 10 matches he has scored 254 runs, but 95 of them came in one innings. Sehwag’s average so far has been 28 while he has maintained a strike rate of 127. A lot better was expected of him.

Mahela Jayawardene (Delhi Daredevils): In 13 games, the Delhi skipper has garnered 278 runs, averaging under 22, nothing to write home about. Jayawardene’s highest score in the series till date is 66. His strike is also on the lower side, at 108. With both Delhi openers struggling, the team was bound to be affected very badly.

Adam Gilchrist (Kings XI Punjab): The retired Aussie wicket-keeper batsman has had a torrid series, raising question marks over his future participation in the league. In 10 games that Gilchrist has featured in so far, he has managed only 162 runs at average of 16.20, with a highest of 42. His strike rate has also been below par at 114. Not surprisingly, Gilchrist dropped himself for a few of the games in spite of being the team’s regular captain.
