Match Report of Australia Vs India, Day 1 of the 3rd Vodafone Test at WACA, Perth

Stumps on Day 1 Report : A blazing unbeaten century from David Warner has knocked India out of the contest in the Third Test at Perth. Australia facing 23 overs before the close of play on Day 1 have raced away to 149 for no loss and thus bringing down the deficit to a mere 12 runs! David Warner spurred by a spat early on in the innings with Ishant Sharma pounded the toothless Indian attack for a 69-ball century! By the close of play, Warner has moved onto 104* from 80 balls with 13 fours and 3 sixes. His partner Ed Cowan calmly collected 40* from 58 balls with 6 fours.

The Indian bowlers with the slight exception of Zaheer Khan were all taken for plenty by Warner. Debutant Vinay Kumar in particular was treated with disdain as he went for 31 in 4 overs. Umesh Yadav went for 42 runs in his 6 overs. Yadav’s only achievement was smacking Warner on the side of his helmet. Zaheer Khan was the only bowler to trouble the Aussie openers and in the last over of the day’s play had Warner beaten atleast thrice.

David WarnerDavid Warner blasted 13 fours and three sixes in a dominating knock. Warner who got to his century in 69 balls is now the joint record holder for the fourth fastest Test century ever.

India Bowled Out : It needed just 30 minutes for the Aussies to wrap up India’s first innings at Perth! The visitors have been bundled out for a paltry 161 in 60.2 overs.

Quickly after Tea, left-armer Mitchell Starc got Vinay Kumar lbw with a full length late inswinger which had him plumb infront of middle. Dhoni (12 from 22 balls) departed next playing a flashy cut off Hilfenhaus and edging the away swinger to second slip. Zaheer Khan threw his wicket too attempting to slog a full length away swinger from the same bowler over mid on and only managing to edge it to first slip.

The last wicket to fall was that of Ishant Sharma’s with the tall man backing away and edging a short and rising delivery from Starc to the keeper. Australia picked up four wickets in just 5.2 overs giving away only 17 runs! Ben Hilfenhaus finished with 4 for 43 in 18 overs, Peter Siddle with 3 for 42 and Mitchell Starc with 2 for 39. Ryan Harris got one wicket that of Sachin Tendulkar.

Tea Break Update : Peter Siddle with two crucial blows minutes before Tea has left India reeling at 144 for 6 in 55 overs. Siddle removed the two well set Virat Kohli and VVS Laxman in the space of two overs to put India back in trouble at the WACA. At Tea, India have got Skipper MS Dhoni on 4* batting along with debutant R Vinay Kumar who is on 5*.

Virat Kohli missed out on his maiden Test fifty yet again. He worked hard to get to 44 (from 81 balls with 6 fours) but lost his wicket trying to drive Peter Siddle on the up square of the wicket. Kohli was a little too early in the shot and the ball which held up on the pitch spooned up towards backward point where Warner pulled off a forward diving catch. It was the end of a promising 68-run stand for the fifth wicket. VVS Laxman departed soon after this dismissal as he opened the face on the backfoot and edged an innocuous short of length delivery from Siddle to first slip.

Drinks Break Update : India are staging a mini fightback on the opening day’s play with Virat Kohli looking good for his 31* (from 61 balls with 4 fours). VVS Laxman on 9* (from 45 balls) had survived a close call when Michael Hussey took an edge on the bounce diving forward at gully. India at drinks in the afternoon session are 99 for 4 in 42 overs.

Lunch Break Report : India have been rattled at 73 for 4 in 28 overs by Lunch on Day 1 of the Third Test at Perth. Two wickets at the stroke of lunch that of Tendulkar and Gambhir had ended what looked like a promising fightback in the series from India.

After Dravid’s exit, Sachin Tendulkar walked in and played three lovely drives to stamp his class. But in the 25th over, he paid price for flicking right across the line to a full length inswinger at 138 kmph from Ryan Harris which he missed and got hit on the pad plumb infront of off and middle. Tendulkar was looking good until then scoring 15 from 25 balls with 3 fours.

With just about 10 minutes to go for lunch, Gautam Gambhir seemed to have lost his concentration because of all the sightscreen disturbances. The left- hander well set on 31 (from 82 balls with 3 fours) poked at a good length off cutter from Hilfenhaus which was well outside off to get caught behind by the keeper. At lunch, VVS Laxman on 4* is at the crease with young Virat Kohli who has hit two sweet boundaries in his 10* from 11 balls.

Drinks Break Update : India are 32 for 2 in 13.5 overs by the first drinks break losing Rahul Dravid to Peter Siddle. Dravid (9 from 35 balls) was caught by surprise with Siddle bowling an inswinging yorker which hit the pad outside leg but rolled back onto the stumps. Earlier Virender Sehwag got out for a duck in the 4th over itself edging a forward defence off Hilfenhaus to Ponting at second slip.

Toss and Teams for Australia Vs India, 3rd Test at Perth

Michael Clarke has won the toss and put India to bat first on a green pacy pitch at the WACA Ground in Perth. The Aussies with a lead of 2-0 have made two changes to their line-up with Ryan Harris and Mitchell Starc coming in for the injured James Pattinson and spinner Nathan Lyon.

India have made one change by bringing on R Vinay Kumar in the place of R Ashwin. So both the sides have gone in with a four-man pace attack. R Vinay Kumar makes his Test debut today.

Pitch Report : The pitch is looking very green with fine grass cover on it. There are also a few cracks on the pitch which will open up under the blistering heat conditions. The pitch at the WACA in Perth will have plenty of carry to push the Wicket Keepers a long way back. It should be a difficult track for the batsmen to handle and for the quick bowlers it’s going to be a paradise!

Australia XI : DA Warner, EJM Cowan, SE Marsh, RT Ponting, MJ Clarke (C), MEK Hussey, BJ Haddin (WK), PM Siddle, RJ Harris, MA Starc, BW Hilfenhaus

India XI : V Sehwag, G Gambhir, R Dravid, SR Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, V Kohli, MS Dhoni (C&WK), Z Khan, I Sharma, U Yadav, R Vinay Kumar
